Moor, meadow and mire

Dartmoor’s mosaic of species-rich habitats makes it a very special place. We will explore several of these precious habitats in the company of Challacombe’s farmer Mark Owen and meet some of the animals whose grazing is vital to maintain them.

We will wander through upland hay meadows, vibrant with flowers and buzzing with insects; traditional pasture full of orchids; and valley mires where dragonflies dart and rare butterflies flutter. After lunch we stride out onto the open hills to stretch our legs and enjoy some of the best heathland on Dartmoor, a blaze of yellow gorse and purple heather. However, if you prefer just the gentle pace of the morning, there is no obligation to join us for the afternoon walk.
