The Great Gather

The Great Gather is part of Our Upland Commons project, which aims to help more people understand the benefits from common land, encouraging more diverse communities to enjoy nature and connect with the commons closest to them. Under this Great Gather event, anyone is welcome to come and experience the sheep gather, bringing them in ready for shearing. You will see first hand the spectacle of the sheepdogs working with the farmers rounding up their stock off the common to bring them back into the farm for sorting. The farmers will also be on hand to explain how the landscape is managed, helping to raise awareness of the connections to the land, low food miles from local produce, the culture and heritage of commons and all the benefits for the environment.

The event will include a short walk of  less than a mile out from the farm to the adjacent common, so be prepared with suitable clothing and footwear to be safe and warm in the evening. Please book in advance for this free event by emailing Dartmoor Hill Farm Project at hfp@dartmoor.gov.uk
