Inside the boundary of Dartmoor National Park, set amongst the moorland farming community and with open moor only a 10 minute walk up a no-through lane. Sowtontown is am ideal base for a walking or riding holiday – with routes directly from the doorstep to the tors, valleys and villages. There is a choice of riding stables in the area and stabling may be arranged at Sowtontown for holidaymakers who wish to bring their own horse.
Peter Tavy is the nearest village. It has a church and a 15thC inn that serves good meals. On beyond Peter Tavy and further up the Tavy valley lies Mary Tavy, once a prolific tin mining community.
There are endless possibilities for exploring the area; breathtaking landscape, historic remains of Bronze Age stone rows and circles, leats and mines. During many weeks of the year there are a variety of guided walks on themes of local interest, organised by the Dartmoor National Park Authority; a list of these is provided in the accommodation. The north and south coasts are both within easy reach for beaches and coastal paths, approximately 1 hour drive away. There are several nearby golf courses and fishing is available close by. Tavistock (winner of best market town 2004) is 3 miles away. It is an attractive town with a long history and up to date shopping facilities, modern swimming pool, arts centre, museum and an excellent tourist information centre. There are plenty of local attractions to suit all ages.
THE SHIPPEN (Sleeps 4) has a most attractive open plan interior with a galleried bedroom and lots of natural stone and wood. The accommodation (40′ x 12′; 12.2Mx3.6M approx.) consists of a sitting room (which can be rearranged with 2 single beds or a double bunk), dining room / kitchen, bathroom (with basin, toilet and bath with shower) and the galleried bedroom with double bed, settee, armchair and TV upstairs. Access to owners washing machine and tumble dryer on request. Secluded paved patio with garden table and chairs, parking for 2 cars.
THE BARN (Sleeps 6) has a large first floor room (36′ x 16′; 10M x 4.8 M approx), where the kitchen, dining area and living area are all in one open space, with wide-ranging views of the surrounding countryside. Downstairs there are 3 bedrooms (1 with a double bed, 1 with twin beds and 1 with full size, top quality bunk beds), a bathroom with lavatory, and a separate wash room with second lavatory and tumble drier and washing machine. The ground floor is carpeted throughout and the original oak beams are left exposed. Garden area with garden seat and table, parking for up to 3 cars.
Well-behaved pets welcome by arrangement. Babysitting. Private certified water supply. First 90 units of electricity included in the rent, 10.05 pence per unit thereafter. All heating fuel used is charged at cost price.
THE HEMPHOUSE (47′ x 15′, 14.3m x 4.6m) has a delightful open-plan living room, kitchen and dining area, fronted with beautiful windows looking out over the valley towards Brentor. There is one single bedroom downstairs, with an en suite toilet and shower room. This room also contains the washing machine and tumble dryer. Upstairs, the landing area is bookended by a double bedroom on one end, and a twin bedroom on the other. There is one upstairs bathroom with sink, toilet and bath.
