Bovey Castle opening grounds for foraging evening

Five-star Devon resort Bovey Castle is opening its Dartmoor grounds for an evening of foraging and gin making this autumn.

Dartmoor’s Daughter – a provider of guided walks which is voted as the number one outdoor activity for Dartmoor National Park on Tripadvisor – is providing an expert-led walk through the resort’s grounds on Friday, September 19th at 6pm, where walkers can learn more about the edible plants and wild botanicals that they are foraging.

Guests will then return to Bovey Castle’s Long Barn to learn how to make their own fruit-infused gin using the ingredients they have gathered.

Emma Cunis is a qualified Hill and Moorland Leader and is the founder of Dartmoor’s Daughter, who will be delivering the hour-long foraging walk.

She said: “Foraging is one of the ways that people would have survived living on Dartmoor thousands of years ago, so this is a great opportunity for locals and Bovey Castle’s hotel guests to gain an insight into this practice and the range of fruit and fungi that can be found on its doorstep.

“This will be the first time I have conducted a foraging adventure on Bovey Castle’s grounds, and alongside some interesting facts about the area, guests can expect to find elderberries and blackberries through to hawthorn berries, rosehip and sloes to infuse their gin.

“There are so many benefits to foraging. It helps us to slow down, de-stress and form a deeper connection with nature, while helping the planet by enabling some of us to source certain produce sustainably and locally.

“Wild foraging is relaxing in itself, but being able to do it in the backdrop of the picturesque grounds of Bovey Castle is the perfect way to make memories with loved ones.”

Danielle Garland, Activities Manager at Bovey Castle, added: “This event is a proud reminder to our local and overnight guests of the beautiful and vast countryside that our region has on offer.

“As the nights get shorter and temperatures become cooler, the autumn presents a great opportunity to enjoy nature in a different way via foraging, and we would encourage the local community and overnight guests to take advantage of this rare event on our grounds.”
