“ I have never before, in my long and eclectic career, been gifted with such an abundance of natural beauty as I experienced filming War Horse on Dartmoor.” Steven Spielberg.

Doggy heaven and pretty good for their humans too

If you are looking for a truly genuine ‘dog friendly’ place to stay, then look no further than Higher Longford Cottages. My little family comprises me, my husband and our boy Barney, our every faithful 4 legged friend. For many years we have enjoyed numerous holidays in the UK and taking Barney with us adds to the pleasure and fun of our much needed time away. We’ve stayed at lots of places advertised as ‘dog friendly’, but some are not really that friendly – at times we have been made to feel that Barney is less than welcome! Not so at Higher Longford Cottages, in fact the opposite is true. Barney is always made as welcome (if not more so) than us every time we visit. There are so many facilities for doggy guests, not only can they stay for free, there is a lovely dog walking area plus all the cottages have good sized enclosed gardens. There is also a kennel facility if needed, and that’s just on site – head out on to Dartmoor and the surrounding areas and you are in doggy heaven with no end of fabulous walks and eateries that really do welcome you and your furry companion. So, it is for this reason, and many more, that we have returned time and time again.

But it’s not just about the dog, we have been back many times because it’s a great location and all of the cottages are lovely (we’ve stayed in a few). They are well equipped, clean, comfortable, and you have everything you need for a home away from home. We’ve enjoyed short breaks and longer stays; we’ve visited during every season and have never run out of things to do and see. It’s not possible to list all of the amazing places to visit, there are so many and much of it is free. Just take a map and put a pin in it, you are bound to find something or somewhere fabulous. The choice is never ending: the magnificent landscape of Dartmoor and its villages nestled within; nearby towns provide everything you need; then there’s the coast a short drive away. If you want something more adventurous than ‘just walking’ to enjoy the most incredible surrounding scenery, there are many local activities such as horse riding, swimming, cycling, fishing, even canoeing and rock climbing!

It’s a great base to explore further afield as well, but even after many years of visiting we still find places in the area that are new to us, which is always a lovely surprise.

If it’s a self-catering UK holiday destination you are looking for, stop looking and book Higher Longford Cottages – you will not be disappointed.
