Welcome to The Old Exeter Inn – England’s Historic Pie House Ashburton, Devon
Step inside our 900-year-old tavern and savour the spirit of Old England. Established in 1130 A.D., The Old Exeter Inn is proudly the fifth oldest pub in England – and every stone here has a story to tell.
From pirates to poets, gentry to prisoners of war, our inn has hosted its share of colourful characters. Most famously, Sir Walter Raleigh was arrested here on July 19, 1603, for treason against King James I. He was taken straight from our inn to the Tower of London. Sir Francis Drake? A regular drinker with Raleigh – and we’re still pouring for adventurers today.
We’re not Michelin-starred (unless you count the tyres on Dave’s old Land Rover), but we are famous for our handmade shortcrust pies, faggots, fish and chips, and artisan cheese boards, all crafted with fresh local ingredients.
Relax in one of our many cosy nooks, where time stands still and food, drink and conversation take centre stage — or unwind in our beautiful Apothecary Garden, which is drawing visitors from near and far with its charm and tranquillity.
We’re proud to offer a globally inspired drinks menu, with options from over 50 countries and 36 products sourced right here in the West Country. From local ales and craft beers to international wines, rare spirits, and small-batch ciders, our bar is a treasure trove for curious drinkers. Whether you’re after a classic pint, a botanical gin, or something a little unexpected, we’ve got drinks for every taste.
Planning a gathering? For business events, private parties, or special occasions, our Otter Tap Room is available to hire — complete with a fully operational beer engine (3 x 4.5-gallon barrels) and a unique “Pour Your Own Pint” experience. The Apothecary Garden, with its own outdoor bar, is also available for exclusive hire with or without the tap room.
