“ I have never before, in my long and eclectic career, been gifted with such an abundance of natural beauty as I experienced filming War Horse on Dartmoor.” Steven Spielberg.

Milestone for Devon Sculpture School

The Sculpture School in North Tawton is now in its 5th year, having become established not only as a leader in the field of realist figurative sculpture, but also as the perfect retreat for those looking for a short creative break in Devon.

The Sculpture School was founded by master sculptor, Andrew Sinclair MRSS and his partner, Diane Coates in 2010 and laid down its roots a stone’s throw from Dartmoor 5 years ago.

The Sculpture School was originally based in Buckinghamshire and after 4 years of steady growth the decision was made to move to Devon. This was not a decision that was taken lightly, with customers travelling from all over the world there are obvious logistical benefits of having a central location. However, the draw to move to Devon was so great that Andrew and Diane felt it was a risk worth taking. They were sure their visitors would fall in love with the county as they had and that their whole sculpture experience would be the better for it. They were not wrong. The purpose-built studio and workshop enjoys 360’ degrees of glorious Devon beauty and the atmosphere is aptly summarised in a review from one of their recent students;

“The whole experience was inspiring, therapeutic and calming. It forced you to focus on something quite beautiful and imaginative and immersed you into another dimension outside of the rat race and emails.”

There are ten 4-day courses throughout the year, ranging from Figurative and Portrait to Animal and Specialist Techniques, all teaching realist sculpture in clay. Associate tutors offer to teach specialist subjects like Moulding & Casting and Bronze Casting throughout the year too.

All manner of people sign up to these courses; men, women, students, retirees, novices and even professional sculptors. The common denominating factor is their desire to improve their skills, invest in themselves and enjoy a short break in Devon.

Recreational courses in sculpture are growing in popularity, but there is nowhere else in the country that offers the opportunity to learn realist figurative sculpture under the guidance of a world-renowned sculptor. And one who is so ready and willing to share his knowledge and techniques and throw open the doors of his professional workshop to visitors.

Andrew explains, “It is very rare for an art school to have access to such a studio, using contemporary, industry standard working practices. I am passionate about inspiring the next generation of sculptors and the obvious way to do that is to be an open book.”

The Sculpture School is the only place in the UK where you can learn the unique ‘Sinclair Method’ of Sculpture, designed by master sculptor Andrew himself. This innovative method incorporates Design Criteria™, anatomy and proportion using Dynamic and Energy Curves™ and The Rapid Sketch Technique™.  This ground-breaking system claims to revolutionise the way you approach sculpture, whatever your ability by breathing life and energy into your work.
