Dartmoor’s Disappearing Red Telephone Boxes

Dartmoor’s Disappearing Red Telephone Boxes is the culmination of a project by Dartmoor Photographer Helen Jackson, who set out to document the remaining red telephone boxes with the boundary of the national park.

Helen began her project in the summer of 2019 scouring local maps and the internet to locate the boxes.  Her journey took her to all corners of Dartmoor where she discovered the fate of many had already been sealed by their unfortunate removal and obliteration from the landscape.  However, a surprising number were still in working order and many boxes, though decommissioned as telephone boxes, had been adopted and repurposed.

Four years on Helen retraced her journey and found sadly that several more of the originally photographed telephone boxes had disappeared and many more now converted into libraries, information points and defibrillator houses.

This full colour coffee table book represents a snapshot in time and preserves the memories of these iconic landmarks for future generations.  Each page showcases a telephone box alongside its past and present status and provides location details for anyone wanting to recreate Helen’s journey.
